Garlic-Herb
Butter Bread

Garlic bread was invented in the 1940s in an Italian restaurant. In this variation, herbs are used to enhance the garlic flavor. The difference between a spice and an herb is that an herb is the aromatic leaf of a plant, while spices are made from the seeds, bark, fruit, flower or roots of plants.

    1 loaf French bread, sliced
    ½ cup butter, softened
1 garlic clove, crushed in a garlic press
    2 teaspoons dried thyme
    ¼ teaspoon dried marjoram
    ¼ teaspoon dried rosemary
    ¼ teaspoon dried parsley

1.  Set the sliced loaf of French bread on a sheet aluminum foil.

2.  In a medium bowl, mix the butter with the garlic.

3.  Crush the herbs in a mortar with a pestle and then add to
the butter, using a wooden spoon.

4.  Spread evenly on each slice of bread. Wrap loaf in the foil.

5.  Bake in a preheated 350
° oven for 20 minutes.

Provençal herb butter: Mix ½ cup butter, 1 tablespoon
chopped black olives, ½ teaspoon chopped rosemary,
1 teaspoon crushed garlic and pepper to taste.

Regular garlic butter: Omit thyme, marjoram and rosemary.
Use a full teaspoon parsley in place of the ¼ teaspoon.

Makes 8-12 slices or 4-6 servings of 2 slices each
